Italy Makes Good Beer Now
Great beer usually doesn’t top the list of things Italy is known for, but craft beer has exploded across the country in the past 10 years. The generic, gassy Italian lagers that we are familiar with are now feeling competition from Italian micro breweries and brew pubs that are producing some creative and interesting flavors. Recently, a few American importers have taken notice of these breweries that are popping up across the boot-shaped country and have been bringing them into the United States. Tipple’s has also noticed! Here are a few Italians that we have brought in:
Birrificio Del Ducato Sally Brown Caffe Baracco – Birrificio del Ducato is located in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna and won “Italy’s Brewery of the Year” in 2010. With good reason. Sally Brown was a runaway favorite at Tipple’s “Rare Beer Tasting.” Sally Brown is an oatmeal stout with coffee added. This beer is exceptionally smooth due to the oatmeal… and delicious.
Birrificio Del Ducato Verdi Imperial Stout – This beer is an 8.2% abv imperial stout brewed with hot peppers. For an imperial stout, this beer is quite easy-drinking and medium in body. Won “Best Beer” at Germany’s Brau Beviale in 2008.
Pausa Cafe P.i.l.s – Pausa Cafe is heavily involved in human rights and ensuring that everyone in their supply chain follows fair labor practices. P.I.L.S. is a pilsner aged in Slavonian oak barrels, giving it a taste different from any other pilsner.
Baladin Elixir – Baladin is located in Piozzo, a village of approximately 1,000 people. Elixer is a Belgian-style strong ale with 10% abv. Smells of tropic fruit. Malty flavor with spices. Warm alcohol bite.
Baladin Nora – Another spiced beer from Baladin. Nora has a floral nose with intense citrus tastes.
Baladin Super – An 8% abv Belgian-style pale ale. Flavors of apricot, syrup, and citrus.
Baladin Xyauyu – The Xyauyu is the premier beer from Baladin. This beer is a 2006 vintage barley wine. It is sweet with mild chocolate notes. Full bodied with vary complex flavors. Xyauyu makes a great gift and retails for $38.99!
