The Featured Wines
Mumm Napa Cuvee M
Winemaker’s Notes: The naturally ripened fruit selected from more than 50 separate vineyards, reveals layers of crisp and creamy textures that are rich and lingering. Individually selected lots were kept separate during initial fermentation in order to highlight their vineyard differences and extract the quintessence of their specific strengths. The resulting blend is a soft and elegant wine that highlights the delicious and powerful ripe fruit flavors that characterize the world-class grapes of the Napa Valley.
Cuvée M exhibits a graceful stream of very fine bubbles gently rising to a persistent mousse cordon with a light peach rose color. The aromas are elegant, rich and complex, showing fresh white and yellow stone fruits with subtle hints of wild strawberry. A light touch of fresh brioche, with hints of vanilla and honey add to the wine’s complex bouquet. On the palate, full flavors of peach and pear combine with a creamy caramel character, which lingers into a long satisfying finish.
Mumm Napa’s Cuvée M is the perfect sparkling wine for champagne cocktails or as an apéritif to pair with hors d’oeuvres. It is also a perfect match with creamy desserts and spicy foods.
91 Points Wine Enthusiast: An unusual blend of 48% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir, 6% Pinot Gris and 3% Pinot Meunier, this is pale sunflower-yellow, with a thick mousse and well-developed layers of orange blossom, lemon and pear.
Mumm Napa Brut Rose
Winemaker’s Notes: The Mumm Napa Brut Rose offers a bouquet of ripe Pinot Noir fruit, rich with black cherry and strawberry notes. Part of the wine is initially fermented in the press, producing the soft fruity character that gives Brut Rosé its directness, while a small percentage of Chardonnay gives the wine power and structure. This more robust quality makes Brut Rose a wonderful wine with many kinds of cuisine, ranging from Thai to Italian.
91 Points Wine Enthusiast: A hearty 80% Pinot Noir dominates in this sparkler, rounded out with 20% Chardonnay. With a pink-salmon hue, it offers peach and wild strawberry aromas followed by similar, medium-bodied flavors, with the addition of succulent plum.
90 Points Wine Spectator: Luscious and festive, this rose has a light pink color, with floral strawberry and cream aromas followed by succulent raspberry, graham cracker and mineral flavors that have a crisp finish.
2013 Franciscan Cuvee Sauvage Chardonnay
Winemaker’s Notes: Luscious and festive, this rose has a light pink color, with floral strawberry and cream aromas followed by succulent raspberry, graham cracker and mineral flavors that have a crisp finish.
92 Points Wine Enthusiast: This wine is medium to full bodied, with integrated, toasty oak and a healthy dose of baked apple and pear. Made in a luxurious style, it delivers in flavor and subtle elegance, with the structure to age further. Drink through 2020.
90 Points Robert Parker: The 2013 Chardonnay Cuvée Sauvage is a beauty from Franciscan Estate. No doubt, based on the name, it was wild yeast fermented with some of their best fruit from Carneros. The wine was aged for 16 months in 100% French oak, and shows nice honeysuckle, poached pear and citrus oil in a medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure and fresh style. This is very Burgundian and could age nicely for another 4-5 years.
2014 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay
Winemaker’s Notes: This graceful Chardonnay has a broad, expressive nose with lemon, stone fruit and vanilla aromas. Medium bodied, this wine has a lovely texture and flavors of red apple, light citrus and Asian pear that lead to a long finish with a hint of creamy oak. There is a nice balance to the acidity and minerality that enhances the freshness and elegance of this wine.
Try pairing this Chardonnay with grilled chicken with lemon aioli, grilled salmon with a cucumber, tomato and fresh dill salsa or roast chicken breast stuffed with spinach, feta cheese and roasted tomato.
91 Points Wine Enthusiast: A greeting of caramel and honey reveals a touch of barrel reduction in this medium-bodied, generously layered wine. It imparts a ripeness of melon and apple, finishing in a sprinkling of nutmeg.
90 Points Robert Parker: A beautiful Chardonnay from Stag’s Leap, the 2014 Chardonnay Karia spent seven months on its lees in 30% new French oak. It exhibits wonderful, tropical pineapple, white peach and honeysuckle notes, great acidity, and beautifully, pure fruit with very little evidence of oak. It is medium to full-bodied, fresh and very seductive. Drink it over the next several years.
2013 Robert Mondavi Maestro 50th Anniversary
Winemaker’s Notes: Merlot leads the orchestra of aromas, flavors and textures in this deeply colored Bordeaux blend. Each varietal plays it part, yet all contribute to the harmonious crescendo of dark black fruit, dark plum, spicy cardamom, nutmeg, and dried herb flavors. The finished piece is mouth-filling with fine tannins and closes with luxuriously, long notes of rich dark berries and spice.
Blend: 59% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 3% Malbec
2013 Robert Mondavi Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker’s Notes: Deep, enticing wild berry and blackcurrant fruit weaves harmoniously with layers of fragrant tobacco leaf, forest floor and toast in a complex ribbon of flavor that flows into a deliciously long finish in this powerful yet refined taste of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.
91 Points Wine Spectator: Tightly wound, with a muscular mix of lead pencil and graphite accenting the core of dense berry, earth, gravel and cedary oak notes. Slowly reveals black licorice, anise and savory herb flavors, but needs cellaring time. Best from 2019 through 2030.
2014 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon
92 Points Vinous: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a tasty entry-level offering from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Deep, rich and resonant, but very much medium in body, the 2014 offers lovely resonance throughout. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice and mocha give the 2014 its plump, juicy personality.
90 Points Robert Parker: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Malbec. Among the top wines, it’s the least expensive red in the Stag’s Leap portfolio. An elegant style of wine, with notes of cedar wood, black and red currants and spice box, this medium-bodied, delicious, complex and elegant wine could easily pass for a second- or third-growth Bordeaux in a blind tasting. It should drink nicely for another 10-15 years.
2015 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker’s Notes: This wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe, velvety tannins – as approachable in youth as in maturity. Caymus farms Cabernet grapes in eight of Napa’s 16 sub-appellations, with diversification enabling the winery to make the best possible wine in a given year. This Cabernet offers layered, lush aromas and flavors, including cocoa, cassis and ripe dark berries.
2013 Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyard Reserve Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker’s Notes: We celebrate Robert Mondavi’s 50th Anniversary with the release of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve wine. This Reserve embodies Robert Mondavi’s philosophy of making wines that are powerful yet gentle. Each year the blend reflects the “First Growth” quality of the To Kalon Vineyard.
Intensity, muscle and concentration define our Reserve vineyard designated wine from Napa Valley’s grand cru site, To Kalon. A complex blend of fresh blackberry, wild berry compote, cassis, dark cocoa powder, forest floor, all-spice, and sweet vanilla, with balancing acidity, make this a perfect Anniversary wine.
Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Verdot.
96 Points James Suckling: Aromas of black currants, violets, lavender, and stone follow through a full body, chewy tannins and toned muscular structure. This is a Mondavi reserve that harkens back to the great years of the 1970s. A tribute to the 50th anniversary of the winery. Try in 2022.
95 Points Robert Parker: A beautifully polished wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, it is still tightly knit and showing high-quality oak. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with outstanding depth, ripeness and purity. There is plenty of backbone and tannin for 25-30 years of cellaring. The wine shows notes of chocolate and plenty of blackcurrant fruit and blackberry. This is a beauty and certainly a great reserve and worthy homage to the legendary Robert Mondavi. Rating 95+
92 Points Vinous: Bright, saturated ruby. Very dark, highly perfumed aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, cassis, licorice, minerals and spices, lifted by a peppery nuance (winemaker Geneviève Janssens noted that Robert Mondavi always liked Cabernet Franc, even back in 1966). Extremely tight and savory, showing an herbal element and conveying an impression of strong acidity. This strikes me as not especially ripe in the context of the vintage but it’s extremely backward today. Finishes with big, mouth-clenching tannins and a note of youthful bitterness. Decant this if you plan to open it in its youth–or, better yet, forget it in the cellar for six or seven years. This large-scaled but rather opaque wine is almost painful today but holds out considerable potential and may ultimately merit a significantly higher score. Rating 92+
2013 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker’s Notes: Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of mixed berry fruit, boysenberry, chocolate covered cherries, layered with hints of graphite and toasted oak. On the palate, a smooth entry is followed by intense, ripe berry notes. This wine is focused and silky through the midpalate, building to a finish with broad tannins and notes of cedar and toasted oak.
94 Points Robert Parker: This iconic estate has produced the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Beautiful purity of expression characterizes this medium to full-bodied, concentrated, impeccably well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is dense purple and the wine offers up notes of spring flowers a touch of background licorice and wood and pure floral crème de cassis and blackberry fruit. It’s full-bodied with a complete mid-palate and follow-through on the palate. The wine can be approached now, or cellared for 20 or more years. Rating: 94+
93 Points Vinous: A dark, explosive wine, the 2013 hits the palate with masses of dark, super-concentrated fruit. Spice, new leather, menthol and tobacco appear with air to round things out. The 2013 is not especially subtle, but it is racy, opulent and voluptuous, all qualities that will hold considerable appeal to readers looking for immediacy and near-term pleasure, all of which the 2013 has in abundance.
93 Points James Suckling: A soft and silky red with chocolate, blackberry and currant aromas and flavors. Round and full. Sexy young cab that seduces you with its softness. Drink or hold.
92 Points Wines Spectator: A refreshingly crisp and lively youngster, with snappy cherry, currant, plum and raspberry flavors at the core, showing shades of anise, crushed rock and oak. Impressively light-footed for Cabernet. Drink now through 2032.
